Well, we kicked off the cocktail blog last night at Rob’s house. After lots of cold and rain the sun had come out and it had warmed up a bit and we both felt like something refreshing. Rob suggested a Lemon Drop, but then realized he was out of lemon vodka and low on triple sec. So based on ingredients on hand, we went with the following recipe:

Lemon Drop

  • 3 parts Absolut vodka
  • 1/2 part triple sec
  • 1/2 part Patron Citronage (orange liqueur)
  • Dash Fee Brothers lemon bitters

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake vigorously (we like ‘em cold!), and serve in martini glasses with sugared rims and lemon wheels.

For the second round (and after the triple sec ran out), we tried a tangerine variation as follows:

Tangerine Drop

  • 3 parts Absolut vodka
  • 1 part Patron Citronage
  • 1 part tangerine juice
  • Dash lemon juice
  • Dash lemon bitters

with the same preparation as before, but substituting a skewered tangerine section for the garnish.

The Tangerine Drop was initially weak in the high register, so that’s why we added the lemon juice to punch up the high note. The lesson learned here was that when it comes to citrus, nothing comes through as strongly as lemon.

Rob then took the progression one step further with a tangerine vodka martini, viz.:

Tangerine Martini

  • 2 shots Absolut vodka
  • Dash tangerine juice
  • Dash Fee Brothers orange bitters
  • Garnish with a skewered tangerine section

Which capped off the cocktail phase nicely, though at that point objectivity was on the wane…
